20 Things To Help Get You Settled

1. Carry a local map in the car. Use a highlighter to mark places you want to go.
2. Go to the Chamber of Commerce for local information.
3. Get a library card. Check out a book on your new state or city.
4. Subscribe to the local paper. You will learn what's happening, what to do, and also lots of information. For example, when to plant what, how to make local dishes, and what's on sale at the grocery store
5. Check on places of interest within a day's drive from your city. Great for weekend exploring and entertainment! Take a picnic to the nearest county or state park.
6. Locate the hospital nearest you.
7. A church is a good resource for baby-sitters.
8. Register to vote.
9. Go to the concierge at a local hotel to find our what he or she recommends to do in the area
10. Find out when garbage pick-up is and what recycling procedures your new town has.
11. Find a church home, if you haven't already.
12. Introduce yourself to your mail carrier.
13. Check out banks.
14. Service charges vary. Start checks with the same number your last bank ended with for continuity and merchant reassurance of your stability.
15. It will help you feel established to get "real" mail. Send for things like address labels and free offers to be delivered to your new address.
16. Ask your neighbors to refer you to good service people (plumbers, electricians, etc.)
17. Have inexpensive "business cards" printed for identification saying:  The Smith Family - Bob ,Jean, Billy and Betty,
Address, Phone
18. Make a list of emergency numbers: Ambulance, Pediatrician, Police, Dentist, Fire, Other medical doctors, Security alarm company, Veterinarians, Phone company, Pharmacy, School, Electrician, Work numbers, Plumber, Sitters.
19. Remember, to have a friend, you must be a friend!
20. Sometimes, to make friends, all you need to do is show up.
